CALL YOUR FRIENDS//NYTCLUB//SINGLE REVIEW

You may remember back in September we had the pleasure of attending Underground festival in Gloucester, which presented us with some of the UK’s most up-and-coming and exciting artists! One that made a huge impression on us was the synth drenched indie pop foursome – NYTCLUB, and they have recently put out an incredibly catchy track for our listening pleasure. It’s literally been on repeat at Spilt Milk HQ and NYTCLUB are quickly becoming one of our favourite emerging bands, AND they are definitely ones to watch in 2017. This is what we think of the track – ‘
Call Your Friends’…

The intro builds slowly, with a hum of different sounds. What this track does very well is blend sounds influenced from several genres.

The layers of sounds start to build the energy and the track starts to buzz. Layering the bass, synth and drums gives the track depth and a driving force. The verse strips back the layers and showcases the vocals, planting the lyrics in your mind before bursting into the bridge with an extremely catchy beat. Then into a euphoric and explosive chorus, where the energy is infectious and will have you dancing along to this track! The lyrics are catchy too so you’ll be singing along in no time. The verses pull those layers away, stripping down then building them back up again to create a fuller sound. This track is like a rollercoaster – it’s fast paced and exciting. It peaks and dips – boasting big sounds that burst with energy then pulling everything back to show off the vocals and each individual sound!
Call Your Friends is bouncy and fun, and a great addition to your New Years’ playlist, sounding just as powerful recorded as it does live. The blend of genres that come together in this track appeal to everyone. I guess I could summarise it something like: elated electric-synth-hip-hop driven pop, brushed with an indie finish. Call Your Friends is unique, fresh and exciting and will have you grooving along in no time. It really makes you want to Call Your Friends round and have a party with them to this track. (See what I did there???)

Boom.

Spotlight : October Drift

Now that I am thinking about it, I’m not entirely sure how I came to welcome October Drift into my Spotify playlist…but I am sure as hell glad that they are there.

October Drift are an alternative four piece and their sound dips in and out of genres, comprising a fuzzy indie with rock hailing guitars and commanding drums. They only appeared on the scene in 2015 and have since built a name for themselves through relentless gigging and word of mouth – here is a live band for you.

As mentioned, their tracks are designed to be live and you can feel this surge through each one. The layers of guitar build with power – dropping out to allow you to feel the vocals through verses – then ripping back into choruses. This teamed with the powerful drive from the urgent drums creates a big sound. Turn these guys up to see what I mean. The vocals ascend with an almost dreamy, fuzzy feel to them; sounding somewhere a bit typically shoegaze-y and also lingers around the sound of bands such as Lusts and Echo and the bunnymen.

I have yet to catch these guys live yet, but I feel like my late discovery has left me missing out. Hopefully this will be a band to catch in the New Year. I see big things for October Drift. Their sound is captivating, and I can only expect them to be even better live. They also have a great way of branding themselves and seem really together – judging from their social media and the tight sound of their tracks, October Drift seem to know who they are and what they want. I look forward to seeing what is next for these boys…

Spotlight : Pretty Vicious

UNDERGROUND_SATURDAY_PRETTYVICIOUS_CBROCK.jpg

We were lucky enough to catch Pretty Vicious headline Underground Festival back in September and we were blown away by their energetic and frenzied set. Since then we have been truly hooked on their sound.

Pretty Vicious are a rock four piece from Merthyr Tydfil in Wales and their facebook boasts an award for ‘most attractive band in the world’. We could question the validity of this award but we won’t… They are also signed to major label – Virgin EMI! Of course this proves just how exciting this young band are.

Their sound has been compare to that of early Arctic Monkeys and The Libertines with a ‘shot of adrenaline’ and a bit more grit. They are a band that you should turn up LOUD. Their sound brags a wall of tearing guitars and tenacious drums mixed with vocals that drip with attitude. The power of their sound translated on a recorded track and booms when performed live. If you haven’t checked out Pretty Vicious already then do it straight away! These guys are certainly ones to catch live!!
